I am commonly asked at booth events or out and about as to how I maintain my facial hair despite the intense summer heat, which has led me to share this information and tips with the bearded community. This is a great guideline to maintaining a healthy and stronger beard throughout the summer months.
Properly Cleanse Your Facial Hair
The common misconception with facial hair is that it is in fact much different than the hair on your head. The biggest cause for dry skin and a brittle beard especially in the summer season is due to the use of commercial shampoo's or soaps that contain cheap ingredients and compounds that strip your skin of its natural oils; ultimately drying out and irritating your skin, which causes flaking or dandruff, also known as "beardruff".
In order to maintain a healthy looking and feeling beard, we formulated an organic beard wash and beard soap bars that are tough on dirt, grime, and buildup, but soft on the hair follicles and skin due to the nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids.
We recommend using a beard wash or soap bar every other day, however, it can be used daily if needed especially for those who work outside. Working in the harsh summer heat can cause excess sweat and salt and bacteria deposit buildup in the pores of your skin, causing irritation, thus bringing us to another important tip.
Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate!
Whether you are at your sink or in the shower, it is important to use your fingertips to gently but thoroughly scrub the roots of your beard hair to strip away the salt, dirt, and bacteria buildup which is often times overlooked.
Lathering your beard hairs for a few moments before washing is not enough to do the trick, especially with longer beards which may cause some spots near the roots to be neglected, ultimately leading to a smelly beard and/or irritated dry skin.
Keep It Nourished & Hydrated
In order to maintain a healthy looking and feeling beard, as mentioned in our last blog, it is much like growing a plant; as long as that plant is receiving the nutrients and proper care, the faster and healthier the plant grows.
Once you have finished properly washing and exfoliating your beard and skin, dry off your beard and follow up with a few drops of beard oil to keep your skin and beard hairs moisturized. Our beard oils were formulated to be lightweight, non-greasy, and absorbs quickly into the hair and skin, which is great for use before bed.
Layer For Protection
If you want to add a little more protection and shape during the summer season, we recommend using a beard balm which conditions and nourishes the beard much like a beard oil but contains organic waxes and butter's that are used to shape, style and control longer beards prone to "flyaways".
In regards to those who work outside or enjoying water parks, using a beard balm even with a short beard is a great way to defend better against the direct sunlight and/or chlorine that can lead to dry, brittle or cracked beard or skin.
